Math

The Academic Solutions Math Program Is Designed to Accomplish Two Goals:

Make sure that each student can keep pace with his/her current math lessons.
Teach each student the basic skills he/she needs to fill in the gaps in his/her math foundation.

As a Part of the Academic Solutions Math Program, Each Student Will:

Master basic math skills (without using a calculator)
Increase his/her speed on timed drills
Develop better computation skills
Strengthen his/her understanding of math concepts
Use manipulatives (a hands-on approach) to discover how math works
Learn how to solve word problems confidently

Self-Evaluation for Math and Reading

Writing and Spelling for Younger Students

Does your child constantly ask how to spell different words?

Writing and Grammar for Middle School and High School Students

Does your child have difficulty coming up with ideas for written assignments?

Does your child struggle to write strong and coherent sentences?

Does your child not know how to get started on writing assignments?

Does your child start with a topic but fail to keep the paper focused on that topic?

Does your child have trouble organizing the paper?

Does your child take too long to complete basic assignments?

Reading Comprehension

To help you answer these questions we have indicated ITBS rankings so that you can use your child's test scores to confirm your observations about your child's progress. If you live in the East Cobb or North Fulton areas, remember that these areas are very competitive and have a much higher "average" performance level than the national average of 50th percentile. The average performance in these areas s closer to the 80th percentile.

Does your child have difficulty understanding the main point of the passage?

Does your child have difficulty remembering details from the passage? These problems would be indicated by an NPC score (national percentile) that is less than 50 on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.

Does your child understand the story generally but fail to understand ideas that are not directly stated? These problems would be indicated by an NPC score (national percentile) that is between 50 and 70 on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.

Does your child score well on the ITBS tests (NPC scores between 80 – 99) but still not perform to his/her potential on tests, projects, or homework? This section would need to produce a little bit of a different response than the others.

How To Interpret the Self-Evaluation:

If there are only one or two minor areas, your child may not have serious difficulty, but you may want to work with your child on homework and observe how he/she studies for tests to determine how you can help in the few weak areas.

If you have questions about our enrichment programs and how we can help an already successful child become even more competitive, call us for information.

If there are several checks: You should consider having your child tested to further investigate these concerns.

If there are none: Your child seems to be doing fine. Keep up the good work!
